Tradition

“Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.”
G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders?" ... He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?" — Matt 15

Tradition v Education

  • What is the relationship between tradition and education ... between tradition and history?
  • Can books hold tradition or history ... do books educate?
  • Where can truth be found ... where does it reside ... in tradition ... in books ... in history ... in the present?
  • Is there a difference between useful and valuable ... what is it?

If these questions leave your head spinning, that may be a good thing if it prompts you to think about the questions they raise more clearly.

One venue we will follow in our search for HOPE in 2025 is the [already waning?] return to "classical education" which began in America in the 1920's. As you prepare to consider it, here are some materials you may find helpful or at least provocative.

... more to come soon ... hopefully from YOU !!!
